Karim El-Araby is a designer with professional and personal experience in the US and abroad. As a first-generation American originally from Egypt, he has studied architecture and urban design in Jaipur, India, and Barcelona, Spain. S. Mike Evans, FAIA, a founding member and former CEO of Hanbury for 22 years, is renowned for his national influence on the planning and design of student learning communities. Known for his energy and communication skills, Mike has consistently been a source of new ideas and emerging possibilities, impacting education at all levels. Jane Cady Rathbone, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C is inspired by her clients and passionate about creating design solutions to strategically position each clients’ unique needs. As both designer and former CEO, she has positioned Hanbury as a leader in higher education, with work represented on more than 150 campuses throughout the United States and abroad.
Her work spans a wide range of building types, but her passion is creating spaces for engaged learning and student success. For over 30 years she has explored the impact of space on student behavior, engagement, wellness, learning, and social outcomes. She uses post-occupancy research and case studies to inform all aspects of her work including strategic planning, programming, campus planning, and the design of award-winning campus buildings.
Jane teaches and lectures frequently on issues related to campus architecture and student life — including programs for ACUHO-I, SCUP, NASPA, APPA and Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Her publications include book chapters on creating spaces for student engagement, the design process in the collegiate environment, and articles in Architecture Magazine as well as higher education association publications. She has served on numerous design juries, the board of directors for the Branch Museum of Architecture and Design, and several regional arts boards. She served on the ACUHO-I's foundation board and as a leader in in ACUHO-I’s “21st Century Project.” In addition, she was awarded a 2008 Parthenon Award for leadership in ACUHO-I and the 2005 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from Rhodes College for her leadership in transforming their campus. In 2019 she received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Rhodes College.

He motivates his design teams to deliver projects on time, on budget, and with clarity and quality as hallmarks of the construction documents. Additionally, Richard is a member of the firm's in-house technology committee, which oversees our Revit® process. His deep knowledge of Revit Building Information Modeling helps the team develop fully-coordinated designs.
Greg Rutledge, FAIA has helped position the firm as a leader in historic preservation with his knowledge of architectural history and preservation technology. Whether renovating a national landmark or teaching clients how to care for and adapt historic buildings, he enjoys projects with the potential to revitalize communities. His experience includes project management, architectural planning, design and documentation and preservation and cultural resource management plans. Greg is an active member of the Association for Preservation Technology International and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and is currently serving on the Architectural Review Board for Norfolk, Virginia.
R. Jordan Ryland is an architect and project manager with experience across single and multi-family residential, commercial, and hospitality projects. Jordan appreciates the challenge of practicing architecture – navigating design principles with rules and regulations. He enjoys the collaboration, detail, and iteration that goes into design development. Jordan has a keen eye for the technical aspects of design including detailing and construction means and methods – including from his own previous experience as a carpenter and builder apprentice.
Reid Sabin, ASLA is an integral member of Hanbury's campus planning team, helping to develop campus master plans and housing master plans for public and private universities both large and small. As a landscape architect, he is cross-trained in most practice areas, including sustainability, land planning, geosciences, and civil engineering. Reid utilizes a combination of hand sketches and rendering in addition to his computer skills with BIM software, Adobe Photoshop, and InDesign Creative Suite to accomplish his work. Reid gained experience in land planning at various firms prior to joining Hanbury. He is an active member of ASLA and SCUP.
Adam Schultz, AIA believes in the architecture of “connection” for strengthening the success of living/learning environments. He spearheads Hanbury's Summer Scholar Legacy program, in which undergraduate and graduate design students work side by side with firm professionals during the summer months. Adam holds a Virginia teaching license for grades K-12, with an endorsement in art education, and regularly exhibits his artwork in regional galleries.

As an IT Engineer, Mark Sechrist ensures the firm's technology operates smoothly and efficiently. Following the pandemic, Mark has been instrumental in guiding the firm through the technological and digital aspects of remote and hybrid work. As the former COO of the firm, Nick Vlattas significantly influenced its finances, operations, and management. Over his 40-plus years with Hanbury, Nick contributed to its growth and practice expansion through key roles in more than 75 projects. He ensured the firm stayed at the forefront of architectural technology and met client specifications for cost, quality, and schedule. Committed to supporting others' success, Nick initiated the Summer Scholars program in 2003, benefiting over 100 students from 32 universities, and fostered the development of the Academy, an in-house continuing education program.

Julia West has worked on projects across education, commercial, residential, civic and cultural institutions. She believes architecture is not just about creating aesthetically pleasing structures – it involves a rigorous process of research, planning, and problem-solving. For every project, Julia applies careful consideration of various factors including site conditions, environmental impact, building codes, client needs, budget constraints, long-term sustainability and the impact on surrounding urban fabric. He played a pivotal role in transforming Portsmouth into a historical and tourist landmark by investing in and preserving key structures in Olde Towne. His work includes the revitalization of Norfolk’s Wells Theatre, which energized the local arts scene and provided a venue for the Virginia Stage Company. His restorations of the Virginia Executive Mansion and Richmond’s historic Branch House were both praised for their authenticity and functionality. Jane Cady Rathbone, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C is inspired by her clients and passionate about creating design solutions to strategically position each clients’ unique needs. As both designer and former CEO, she has positioned Hanbury as a leader in higher education, with work represented on more than 150 campuses throughout the United States and abroad.
Her work spans a wide range of building types, but her passion is creating spaces for engaged learning and student success. For over 30 years she has explored the impact of space on student behavior, engagement, wellness, learning, and social outcomes. She uses post-occupancy research and case studies to inform all aspects of her work including strategic planning, programming, campus planning, and the design of award-winning campus buildings.
Jane teaches and lectures frequently on issues related to campus architecture and student life — including programs for ACUHO-I, SCUP, NASPA, APPA and Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Her publications include book chapters on creating spaces for student engagement, the design process in the collegiate environment, and articles in Architecture Magazine as well as higher education association publications. She has served on numerous design juries, the board of directors for the Branch Museum of Architecture and Design, and several regional arts boards. She served on the ACUHO-I's foundation board and as a leader in in ACUHO-I’s “21st Century Project.” In addition, she was awarded a 2008 Parthenon Award for leadership in ACUHO-I and the 2005 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from Rhodes College for her leadership in transforming their campus. In 2019 she received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Rhodes College.

Additionally, Richard is a member of the firm's in-house technology committee, which oversees our Revit® process. His deep knowledge of Revit Building Information Modeling helps the team develop fully-coordinated designs.
Greg Rutledge, FAIA has helped position the firm as a leader in historic preservation with his knowledge of architectural history and preservation technology. Whether renovating a national landmark or teaching clients how to care for and adapt historic buildings, he enjoys projects with the potential to revitalize communities. His experience includes project management, architectural planning, design and documentation and preservation and cultural resource management plans. Greg is an active member of the Association for Preservation Technology International and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and is currently serving on the Architectural Review Board for Norfolk, Virginia.
R. Jordan Ryland is an architect and project manager with experience across single and multi-family residential, commercial, and hospitality projects. Jordan appreciates the challenge of practicing architecture – navigating design principles with rules and regulations. He enjoys the collaboration, detail, and iteration that goes into design development. Jordan has a keen eye for the technical aspects of design including detailing and construction means and methods – including from his own previous experience as a carpenter and builder apprentice.
Reid Sabin, ASLA is an integral member of Hanbury's campus planning team, helping to develop campus master plans and housing master plans for public and private universities both large and small. As a landscape architect, he is cross-trained in most practice areas, including sustainability, land planning, geosciences, and civil engineering. Reid utilizes a combination of hand sketches and rendering in addition to his computer skills with BIM software, Adobe Photoshop, and InDesign Creative Suite to accomplish his work. Reid gained experience in land planning at various firms prior to joining Hanbury. He is an active member of ASLA and SCUP.
Adam Schultz, AIA believes in the architecture of “connection” for strengthening the success of living/learning environments. He spearheads Hanbury's Summer Scholar Legacy program, in which undergraduate and graduate design students work side by side with firm professionals during the summer months. Adam holds a Virginia teaching license for grades K-12, with an endorsement in art education, and regularly exhibits his artwork in regional galleries.

As an IT Engineer, Mark Sechrist ensures the firm's technology operates smoothly and efficiently. Julia West has worked on projects across education, commercial, residential, civic and cultural institutions. She believes architecture is not just about creating aesthetically pleasing structures – it involves a rigorous process of research, planning, and problem-solving. For every project, Julia applies careful consideration of various factors including site conditions, environmental impact, building codes, client needs, budget constraints, long-term sustainability and the impact on surrounding urban fabric.
