Atlantic Park Celebrates “Bottoming Out”
Virginia Beach, VA – Atlantic Park, the highly anticipated mixed-use development reshaping the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, reached a significant construction milestone with the "bottoming out" of its centerpiece surf lagoon. Hanbury celebrated this milestone alongside developer Venture Realty Group, W.M. Jordan, design partners, and community members.
Unlike traditional construction projects that celebrate "topping out" by placing the tallest structural element, Atlantic Park's surf lagoon—a 2.67-acre surf-park powered by Wavegarden Cove technology—marked its "bottoming out" by laying the foundational structure that will soon replicate natural ocean waves for an authentic surfing experience.
The broader Atlantic Park development spans three city blocks over 10.95 acres, blending residential units, a 70,000-square-foot indoor-outdoor entertainment venue, retail and office spaces. The project is uniquely positioned to enhance the local cultural landscape by continuing Virginia Beach’s rich heritage in music and surf culture.
"This has been a long journey, with much work still ahead," acknowledges Alec Yuzhbabenko, Atlantic Park Design Lead. "but today allows us a moment to pause and reflect on how an evolving idea, nurtured over years, is becoming a reality. Today's ceremony is a celebration of the 'village' it has taken to realize such an ambitious dream. Together, we are creating a legacy for generations to come."
Upon completion, Atlantic Park will also feature over 300 multi-family residential options, ranging from studio apartments to three-bedrooms, all designed with a focus on maximizing interactions with both the community and the natural environment. The inclusion of lush gardens, rooftop terraces, and extensive amenities promotes a holistic lifestyle aligned with Atlantic Park's overarching theme of health and well-being.
Designed by Hanbury in collaboration with Cooper Cary and Gensler, Atlantic Park continues to make strides toward its anticipated completion next summer. Today’s ceremony marks a pivotal step toward becoming a dynamic new landmark on the East Coast—a bucket-list destination that promises a sustainable and vibrant future for Virginia Beach.
