Introducing Erin Vu
Welcoming Our New Director of People Operations: A Conversation on Growth, Culture, and Clarity
It’s no secret that at Hanbury, people are at the heart of everything we do. Every concept pinned on the wall, every team huddle, and every shared success is fueled by the unique voices and talents that define our firm. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce our new Director of People Operations—someone who will focus, quite literally, on our people.
Recently, we sat down with Erin Vu to learn more about her role, her vision for Hanbury, and the experiences that led her to a career in People Operations.
Q: For those who may not be familiar, could you explain what a Director of People Operations does and how this role is pivotal at Hanbury?
A: The Director of People Operations is a new role for Hanbury. My focus is on providing strategic and operational guidance related to the firm’s people processes—hiring, onboarding, performance management, mentoring, and leadership development. I’ll also manage our policies and processes and serve as a resource for conflict resolution.
Q: Can you share a bit about your background and what drew you to a career focused on People Operations and human resources?
A: I have over 11 years of experience in Human Resources and People Operations, spanning several different industries (I was in biotech before coming to Hanbury). My degrees are in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, which involves applying psychological principles to improve the workplace for both employees and the organization. Since we spend so much of our lives at work, I’m passionate about making that environment positive and rewarding.
Q: How do you see your role as Director of People Operations contributing to the firm’s strategic objectives?
A: Hanbury wants to be known not only for great design work but also for being a great place to work. That goal aligns directly with every initiative I’ll be undertaking.
Q: What made Hanbury stand out to you during your search, and what are you most excited about in your role?
A: I met several members of Hanbury’s leadership team and visited two offices during my interview process. The transparency and honesty I encountered really impressed me, as did the passion and enthusiasm everyone showed for the firm. I’m excited to meet everyone at Hanbury and work together to achieve the firm's goals.
Q: How do you hope to enrich our team culture and help Hanbury uphold its core values?
A: Hanbury’s core values—collaboration, curiosity, nourishment, integrity, and social, environmental, and fiscal responsibility—will guide my approach. I’ve started hosting both virtual and in-person meet-and-greet sessions to understand what’s working and what needs improvement. From there, I’ll maintain an open-door policy and integrate your feedback into everything I do.
Q: Could you describe your leadership style?
A: My leadership style is collaborative, transparent, and inclusive. Great ideas can come from anyone, so I focus on listening closely and working together to develop solutions that will benefit everyone.
Q: What’s a piece of advice you’ve received over the years that you find invaluable in your role today?
A: “Clear is kind.” If I ever hesitate to offer feedback, I remind myself how it feels to not know or understand something. Providing clarity is one of the best ways to show respect and support.
Q: Beyond work, what are some passions or hobbies that keep you inspired?
A: I enjoy going to new restaurants and concerts with my husband. We also spend a lot of time hiking with our dog, Sophie. I grew up waterskiing, which is a hobby I’m still able to enjoy during summer weekends on Smith Mountain Lake (in Virginia). I recently joined a sailing club in Baltimore, and my goal is to become a Skipper in 2025!
Amid our season of growth, including our recent expansion to eight offices, we recognize that culture and collaboration must evolve just as boldly. This new position keeps us rooted in the shared vision that brought us here and strengthens our commitment to being not only a great design firm but also a truly great place to work. We’re excited to see how Erin’s presence will shape our culture and our future, reinforcing our belief that great things happen when people feel seen, heard, and supported.
Sails raised, spirits high—off we go!
