Virginia Union University Master Plan

Virginia Union University's Master Plan skillfully merges historical reverence with contemporary functionality, charting an exciting trajectory for the institution through 2032.

Developed collaboratively over 24 months, the Virginia Union master plan presents a dynamic vision that builds on the nearly 160-year commitment by previous stewards to preserve Virginia Union's African American heritage, culture, and sense of place. Aligning with the strategic goals outlined in the university's "Delivering on the PROMISE" roadmap, it addresses immediate campus community needs while establishing a framework for future growth and adaptation.

Central to the plan are recommendations that reimagine campus thresholds and reinforce Virginia Union's brand and identity. A new Student Life Community is anchored by the proposed residential village which aims to strengthen community ties, support student wellness, and contribute to successful student outcomes. Along the primary axes of Brook Road and N. Lombardy Street, reinvigorated Cultural Arts, Recreation, and Athletics facilities combine with enhanced pedestrian experiences to enrich campus culture, elevate academic pursuits, enhance social interaction on campus, and reinforce the University's historic role in north Richmond.

These initiatives collectively aim to bolster academic and student life, reinforcing the university’s role and influence within the community and beyond. By strengthening urban connections and improving campus gateways, the plan fosters deeper interactions between the university and the city of Richmond, encouraging greater collaboration and shared growth.
